North Cowichan is a community of communities, and it is not Duncan.

North Cowichan had 31,990 residents in 2021. The municipality spans 195 square kilometres with 40 kilometres of oceanfront, and includes Crofton, Chemainus, Maple Bay, Quamichan, Bell McKinnon, Berkey's Corner and South End/University Village. The City of Duncan was created in 1912 when the town part of the old municipality voted to secede.

The local economy is in transition. Domtar permanently closed the Crofton mill after announcing it in December 2025, affecting 350 workers, and Western Forest Products extended the temporary closure of its Chemainus sawmill through the end of 2026, affecting about 150 employees.

The municipality's Economic Development Action Plan focuses on the local business climate, helping traditional industries adapt, nurturing emerging opportunities, building a sense of place and regenerative economic principles. In November 2025 Council adopted a tax exemption for qualifying industrial projects, and work is underway to extend water servicing to industrial land off Highway 18.

    Honest note

Not every North Cowichan business needs a rebuild. A trades company may only need clearer service areas and a better quote form. We will tell you which before we quote.

    Who this is for

Built for North Cowichan businesses spread across several communities.

A homeowner in Maple Bay wants to know you will come out. An industrial buyer wants proof of capability. A visitor to Chemainus wants to know what is open. Each needs a different path.

    Industrial suppliers & contractors

Fabricators, industrial services and technical suppliers

Buyers compare capability and proof. Capability pages, projects you can share and an RFQ route matter, especially when looking for new customers.

    Construction & home services

    Builders, renovators and trades

Homeowners across Crofton, Chemainus and Maple Bay compare photos, reviews and coverage. One clear service area beats a page per community.

    Tourism & hospitality

Visitor businesses, galleries, restaurants and waterfront services

Visitors plan on phones. What you offer, seasons, directions and an easy booking or inquiry decide the visit.

    Agriculture & local services

Farms, food producers, clinics and professional offices

Customers want to know what you offer and how to reach a person. Wholesale buyers may need their own path.

    The North Cowichan approach

How digital growth should work for a North Cowichan business.

The goal is accurate, useful sites for a municipality in transition, without treating closed mills as current customers or using the closures as a sales hook.

    Step 01

    Name the right municipality

Say North Cowichan or your community where you are. Duncan is a separate city with its own customers.

    Step 02

Serve several communities on one site

List the communities you cover on your service pages instead of cloning pages.

    Step 03

    Keep industry content current

Capability pages should describe what you do now and the customers you serve now.
