Most owners check their Google ranking the same way. They pick up their own phone, search for what they sell, and look for their name. It feels like a fair test, but it is the one search least like a customer's. We built SearchTerrain because that single search kept giving business owners the wrong picture.
The problem with checking from your own phone
Google does not show everyone the same local results. It uses where the searcher is standing, and often what they have searched and clicked before. Your phone is usually at or near your business, and it has looked you up many times. It is about the friendliest audience you will ever have.
Location matters more than most people expect. For a search like "pressure washing near me", the businesses Google shows can change from one neighbourhood to the next. A company can look like the obvious choice from its own driveway and barely appear on the other side of town, where half its customers live.
So an owner's screenshot showing them near the top, and a customer saying they could not find the business, can both be true. They are looking at different maps.
What we kept running into in client work
In our local SEO and Google Business Profile work, the first question is almost always "where do we rank?" The honest answer is "it depends where you are standing", and that is not a satisfying thing to hear when you are paying for results.
A single average position does not help much either. It blends the areas you dominate with the areas you are missing, and the areas you are missing are usually the ones worth working on. Checking by hand from different locations is possible, but doing it for every service, every city and every month is slow, and easy to do inconsistently. We wanted something we could run the same way every time and show to a client without a long explanation.
How a grid check works
The idea is simple. Instead of one search from one phone, you lay a grid of points across the area a business serves. At each point, the same search is run as if a customer were standing there, and the business's position is recorded. Put the results on a map and you can see the pattern at a glance: strong near the shop, weaker at the edges, missing entirely in a part of town where a competitor is well established.
Run it again later and the map shows what changed. That is useful after real work, such as fixing a profile's categories, publishing a proper page for a city, or a steady run of new reviews. It turns "I think it is better" into something you can look at. That is what SearchTerrain's grid check does, and it is how we now measure Maps visibility for clients such as A1 Washing, across the cities they serve.
Rankings by service, not just by name
Businesses rarely rank for one thing. A cleaning company might do well for one service in one city and hardly show up for another service a short drive away. Grouping everything under one keyword hides that. So SearchTerrain also tracks Google rankings for each service in each city, which lines up with how we build service and location pages in the first place.
AI assistants are a new place customers look
More people now ask ChatGPT, Gemini or Google's AI Mode who they should call. These tools usually answer with a short list of names rather than ten links. If your business is not named, you are not part of that conversation at all, however good your Maps position is.
SearchTerrain's AI visibility check looks at whether those assistants mention or recommend a business. AI answers shift more than search results do, so we treat this as a signal to watch, not a score to chase. The work that helps, clear pages that say what you do and where, is the same work behind our AI search optimization.
What SearchTerrain does
SearchTerrain is a local SEO tool for small businesses in the US and Canada, built by Vortio. In one place it shows:
- Where the business ranks on Google Maps from a grid of points across its service area
- Google rankings for each service, by city
- Whether ChatGPT, Gemini and Google AI Mode mention or recommend it
- Website health, backlinks and Search Console data
- A short weekly list of what to fix first
That last item matters most to us. Owners do not need another dashboard full of numbers. They need to know which two or three things are worth their time this week. There is a free instant snapshot on the home page with no signup, and paid plans include a free trial.
How we use it at Vortio
We use SearchTerrain to track client rankings in our local SEO and Google Business Profile work, so the reports we share reflect what customers across a service area actually see. It does not do the work for anyone. Someone still has to fix the profile, write the page and ask happy customers for reviews. It just makes it clearer where that effort should go, and whether it is working. No tool can promise a ranking, and we will not pretend this one does.
When you probably do not need it
If nearly all your work comes from referrals, or you serve one small area where everyone already knows you, a grid of rankings may be more than you need. A careful pass through your profile and website will do more. Our local SEO checklist for KWC businesses is a good place to start.
Frequently asked questions
Why does my business rank differently on my phone than on a customer's?
Google uses the searcher's location, and often their history, to decide what to show. Your phone is usually near your business and has searched for it before, so it tends to show you a friendlier result than a stranger a few kilometres away would see.
What is a Google Maps grid check?
It runs the same search from many points spread across your service area and records where your business appears at each one. The result is a map of where you show up well and where you do not.
Is SearchTerrain free?
There is a free instant snapshot on the home page with no signup. Paid plans add ongoing tracking and include a free trial.
Does Vortio use SearchTerrain for client work?
Yes. We track client Google Maps rankings with it as part of our local SEO and Google Business Profile work.
